insidious trailer 2010:
The very first thing you as the audience hear in the trailer is a loud sharp bang, which creates immediate tension. This connotes danger and the high intensity of it straight away puts the audience at the edge of their seat. it also helps establish the genre of the film, because before they have seen any visuals, they will be able to recognise that is it a horror film from the fact that the initial sound effect is very threatening and uninviting.
Next, the letters spelling 'insidious' appear on the screen in disordered combinations and as this is happening, there is non- diegetic sound effects of blades being thrown and lots of interference. These un-naturalistic sound effects are very disorienting and strange, creating a tense atmosphere and suggesting to the audience that there is a lot of disturbance.
Dialogue is used to reveal some of the narrative. A character says " Are you ready?", followed by a hesitant reply of "yes". This suggests to the audience that they are about to do something precarious or perhaps dangerous. Although the character is asking a fellow character if they are ready, it is also like they are asking the audience if they are ready to be thrilled by the movie. Almost like a warning of the impending horror which is about to come.
Diegetic sound of a metronome ticking is used to slowly build up tension and it suggests to the audience that it is only a matter of time before something disturbing and horrific happens. A ticking time bomb. The ticking could also represent a heart beat becoming increasingly more intense as the suspense rises, making the audience feel nervous with apprehension.
The ticking of the metronome continues whilst layers of diegetic sounds from different clips have been cut and pieced together. There is short bursts of dialogue such as "sweetie" and "morning guys" and this suggests that initially everything is normal but the the pace increases and suddenly there is the sound of a baby crying which suggests it has been disturbed by something, followed by the synchronous sound of wood snapping as a boy steps through a rung on a ladder and falls on the floor. This suggests that things are slowly becoming problematic for the characters and as the sound becomes more erratic, a very chaotic atmosphere is created.
The chaotic sound effects suddenly stop, and the narrative " he's not in a coma, i don't know what to call it" creates some sense of mystery and suggests that something supernatural has happened to the boy. There is the repetition of un-naturalistic sound effects which sound somewhat like an evil creature is breathing or trying to communicate, making the audience feel worried for the characters who seem to be disturbed by this reoccuring sound/creature.
